Silly little footnote I wanted to put down. Twenty years ago this summer my family moved out of the house I grew up in and into where my mom and dad still live. The big 32-inch TV set by Sony, which also functioned as a piece of furniture, it was so big and housed inside a wooden cabinet, was replaced today. This afternoon I set up the new 40-inch flatscreen TV (also by Sony) that Dad bought, as well as a stand to set it on. The old set is trading hands, so I'm kinda pleased it'll still be used. It feels remarkable that it only needed a repair visit once in all those years.

Also AHHHHHH THE DARK KNIGHT IS OUT TOMORROW DON'T WANNA WAIT BUT I HAVE TO SOMEONE SHOOT ME.

Just a heads-up for fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender who, like me, have tended to only find out about new episodes at the last minute... XD; Nickelodeon is starting to broadcast the rest of season 3's episodes starting tonight. The first batch of episodes being shown were already released on DVD, so nothing technically new there, but brand new episodes begin Thursday the 17th, with the three-part finale being broadcast in one big bloc on Saturday the 19th. Set your VCRs, DVRs, whatever. =3

    art post... sorta

It may have been more relevant to bring this up next year on this date, which will be the 20th anniversary of his death... but it felt right for me to bring it up today. He and so many others who worked at Termite Terrace gave me laughter so many times in my life. Chuck Jones was the only one of them I was ever able to say "Thank you" to. You're missed, Mel.

    [info]autumnaldave brought this to my attention earlier this week. Jeff Smith's Bone is one of the few comic series that consistently left me in awe over the last 25 years I've been collecting comics. Going to see his work honored like this is something I'm really wanting to do. Anyone else in the area interested? =D;

Finally, ahhhhh the sketches I bought from [info]memento_macabre arrived today ahhhhh and you touched some of them up ahhhh and they look gorgeous ahhhh marry me plz. ;___; *spazzes*

Okay, The Incredible Hulk doesn't suck. It didn't have my inner geek squeeling as much as Iron Man did, but the film itself was entertaining, the CG sequences impressive, and there were a lot of good nods to the original (and even the TV series). It's really showing that Marvel is moving ahead and integrating its properties together... with the probable exceptions of Spidey and the FF, both of which are most likely too tightly bound to their distributors. But moving towards an Avengers movie? Fuck yes. XD

Seriously, people, why does June seem to be Birth Month?  It was fine back in the day when it was just my sister Maggie (older than me by five years and a day) and me, but since then, since I started this socializing thing (which I'm still an amateur at D=) the number of people I know with June birthdays has exploded[info]shinibun, [info]zrana, [info]memento_macabre (and apparently her friend Clint's birthday is today as well =O), my friend Motenten in XI... and I get the feeling I'm forgetting people... anyone?  And oh yes Kagura Chizuru <3

But last Friday SquareEnix was able to completely restore my FFXI characters. I'm now super-paranoid that my account may get jacked again someday, 'cause SE states they'll only do something like this once EVER, but for now I'm basking.

So, got back from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull just now. Packed house, all age groups... the kinda thing Indy's always appealed to.

I ended up seated next to a young boy, 8-9 years old. 'Bout... two-thirds thru he turns to me and says "This is good!" with a big smile on his face.

    *comics rant*
Okay, let's review some of the stuff that's gone down with the X-Men since 2004 or so.

Magneto commits acts so heinous (killing 5,000 New Yorkers and Jean Grey) that Marvel decides to retcon it all and say "an impostor did it!"
The Scarlet Witch goes absolutely bat-shit insane, killing three teammates (one of whom has actually managed to stay dead) and causing the Avengers to be disbanded. Previous storylines with her are discounted because they wouldn't let the writer do what he wanted.
Professor Xavier is revealed to have known from the beginning that the Danger Room AI had achieved sentience, hid this fact from his students, and suppressed it to remain a subservient training tool.
The Scarlet Witch, again for plot convenience, now god-modes harder than anyone this side of Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet could dream of and rewrites reality upon urging from Quicksilver, creating a world where mutants now outnumber humans and Magneto rules over them. When the truth is brought to light, Magneto murders Quicksilver. The Witch brings her brother back to life, and rewrites every plane of reality in the Marvel Universe (with the known exception of the Ultimate 'verse) so that almost every mutant is depowered and human.
Professor Xavier is retroactively revealed to have joined a secret cabal of superhumans, unofficially dubbed the Illuminati, whose purpose is to deal with far-reaching threats to Earth. He fails to listen to the Black Panther, who warns of disaster should this self-righteous group disagree.
Magik, long dead as a result of the Legacy virus, is revived, partially as a result of the Scarlet Witch's rewriting reality, but without her human soul, and is almost wholly a creature of evil.
    Kitty Pryde is apparently killed.
Bishop is revealed to have come to the present for the express purpose of killing a newborn mutant baby who may be responsible for his timeline's existence, betrays the X-Men in doing so, and nearly kills Professor Xavier.
In the wake of the mass depowering of mutants and the mistaken belief that Xavier has been killed, former New Mutants Cannonball, Mirage, Sunspot and Magma join a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Cyclops forms a junior team of X-Men to hunt down and/or kill these former teammates.
In addition, in all likelihood, one or more members of the X-Men will be revealed to actually be a Skrull who has infiltrated the team. Your guess as to whom is as good as mine right now, but the prime candidates to me are Colossus and Cyclops.

*beats head against a wall* Way to encourage fans to care for your titles, Marvel.

For those of you who care about what happens in the spandex world of comics, I'm sure there's more going on and has gone on that doesn't sit well with you, not just the X-Men and Marvel. But when there's only been three occurrences in the mutant titles in the past 4-5 years that've made me really happy; Colossus's return, he and Kitty finally consummated their love, and Quicksilver finally realizing he needs to walk the road to redemption again (he has his super-speed back! I don't know how! Don't care too much right now!), it makes me glad I've managed to spend less money on this crap than I used to. Who knows, maybe someday I'll even wise up and stop buying the things at all. *sigh*

For anyone who's wondering about seeing Iron Man, just go ahead, I don't think you'll regret it. It mightn't be an invincible film (hurrr), but this old comics geek walked out satisfied, fears of another Last Stand wiped away. Put it on the same pedestal as Spider-Man 2 and Batman Begins, it's a keeper. Now just need to hold out until Incredible Hulk and Dark Knight come out.

In other news, I discovered earlier this week that going two+ years without seeing a dentist is bad for one's choppers. My 37 years of cavity-free teeth are done; I have one in one of my upper wisdom teeth, and a second one starting to form in the other. Dunno yet what I want to do, but it's either get 'em filled or have two of the wisdom teeth removed to prevent more cavities down the line. Not fond of that logic, but we'll see. I also need to start flossing, little touch of gum disease. >_< Sucks to be me.

Um, also, I finally got around to finishing Twilight Princess this week. Thanks to prodding from a certain someone, I abandoned at least for now trying to get everything done and just went ahead and beat Ganondorf. Fairly hard too, though part of that might have been the audience factor from Dave popping in to visit while I was running around. I wanna start playing another Zelda game while I'm in the groove, just undecided between the nostalgia of replaying A Link to the Past (which, along with Zelda II is the only Zelda game I'd played previously), or working at the start of the modern games, with Ocarina of Time. Meh, I'll figure something out.

Though the hour is odd, it's now complain about Tuesday time!

FIRST. Monday and Tuesday I'd been helping out getting work done on Maggie's garage. Yes, that garage, the one that had been partially built last year before some old neighbor lady with a bug up her ass contacted village hall and had them shut things down until CERTAIN ISSUES were addressed. We can proceed with finishing the garage now, though I know Murphy's Law will kick in again at least once along the way.

Anyway; the fairly simple construction work I've been doing has reminded me what a butterball I've become since regular work went away. I hammered a sufficient number of nails Tuesday that my aim with the hammer worsened as the day went on... On top of that, muscle fatigue built up, eventually getting to the point where I had to use both arms to hammer, and then only for a few minutes at a time (it felt like) before I had to stop and rest. *stupidly continues to make no plans to be like health-minded friends and start exercising*

What tops it off is that when I woke up a while ago, I felt like playing Twilight Princess again for the first time in weeks... problem being, after maybe an hour's worth of waving the Wiimote around, my hand and wrist got sore. XD; I put the game down, but the soreness has progressed to actual pain now. Blehhhhh. *continues to type out of stubbornness*

SECOND. The time has come once again for me to curse whatever God set His/Her imperfect creations on this Earth and run around with buggy genetic codes, leaving me to suffer thru Allergy Season once again. WHYYYYYYYYYY!?

There was a 'quake of similar strength sometime in the mid-late 90's, but I never felt that one. Woulda been nice to have been aware of what was actually happening, coulda felt like those pesky California peeps. XD

So after recent posts by [info]shadrad and [info]zrana about FMA chapter 82 and Ling's awesomeness, I decided to catch up on what's online... the last time I'd done so chapter 65 was new. I keep doing that; setting a manga down and returning to it later. I put Bleach down around chapter 195 or so, and I think I'll only be reading it as Viz puts it out, even with their editing yummy bits like the Rangiku & Orihime scene. Same with Naruto, let that go somewhere around 260, picked it up again up to roughly 345, and left it be since that. Speaking of editing, wonder what Viz's gonna do with Konohamaru's advanced Sexy no Jutsu, ha ha. But, like I said, got sucked back into FMA...

    And, well... OMG THE THINGS I'VE MISSED *___*; Mostly the interplay between Ed, Al and Winry throughout it all, though that bit with Hoenheim in chapter 68 was marvelous, and... well, I'm a happy fanboy after the Winry bits in chapter 81. ;___;

So, this past Saturday [info]autumnaldave and I revived an activity we used to do fairly often in the late 90's and the early part of this decade... namely travel down to the University of Illinois campus at Champaign/Urbana and attend the viewing of various shows by the anime club there. (WEBSITE PLUG http://jac.anime.net/)

Both of us getting by on little sleep (not thru excitement I don't think =P), Dave rolled by Sat. morning, setting off in my car. He drove down, since he was intent on indulging himself at a few choice bars he had picked out. After stopping for a nice, inexpensive breakfast in a town that time forgot (I'm thinking it was the north side of Kankakee, but my fear-crazed memory might be wrong), we arrived in Champaign a few hours later.

The town had changed in the (probably) two years since we'd last gone there. Several businesses that we'd known were gone and replaced, or in the process of being replaced. Some buildings had been given a facelift, and others were under construction. Thanks to a zoning law change, it was now a bitch to get parking, but we managed... one ticket aside. XD; We visited a comic shop we hadn't been to before, checked things out, and headed over to the lecture hall where the JAC shows its stuff.

When we arrived, they were starting to show Kekkaishi 47 and 48. Interesting enough, and fairly easy to follow despite coming in near the end of the series. Next were eps. 22-23 of Nodame Cantabile, the series conclusion. Maybe I'm a little cheated by seeing the end, but it was funny and cute, leaving me wanting to see more. It was break time then, though the club showed an AMV of a show I sorta recognize but don't know the name of, done to an annoyingly done mix of Marisa Stole the Precious Thing, the Touhou fan-made video. After a short break, the club began again - skipping showings of Code Geass and Hayate the Combat Butler because they started late - and showing NANA 44-45. Despite moving ahead from where I'd left off in the manga, NANA remains as painful to experience to watch - in a good way - as it was to read.

Afterward we stopped in at Papa Del's Pizza, an old favorite of ours. Dave inhaled 2/3 of his side before slowing down; I just took my time, savoring. XD Refueled, we stopped briefly at a liquor store so Dave could look for some local beers, after which he sallied forth to the bars he had picked out! I, however, feeling my lack of sleep and generally just being a pussy, stayed behind in the car to try to catch some sleep, mostly unsuccessfully. After 90 minutes or so, I'd finally maybe fallen into stage 1 sleep when Dave got back. Trip ovah, time to head home. We returned about 14 hours after we'd left, Dave slumming a while at my place to continue sobering up before heading home.

    TRIP REPORT DONE

Next is this online role-playing meme [info]kopiispace did last week! This was something I really wanted to do, but distractions and the sheer length of time required to remember stuff and type it all out delayed it until now. I wanted to try to follow space's example and include a picture for every character I've RPed. However, I don't have any image-editing program on this computer, and I don't want to bother any of my friends with whittling down an image for this, so my laziness concern for your downloading time wins out. LJ-cut for size. )

So, ah, as I may have mentioned back in February, I recently purchased a Wii.  Wireless, however, is something I've never believed in thanks to all the grief it's caused Pu and my sister Maggie, so I was lazy about doing anything to bring it online.

HOWEVER...  As some of you may know, Smash Brothers Brawl came out this month, and I finally succumbed to peer pressure, buying a copy for myself and a wireless router as well.  Never mind that poor Twilight Princess will take even longer to finish now, sigh.

I may talk about my adventures last night, but looking at Pu's and Yuuki's LJs may give you a rough idea of how that went.  XD;  I'd go into it more now, but there's some stuff that needs doing, so one last thing:

...There are few things that annoy me more in comic books than when an important plot point is revealed in a book before the story that contained said plot point is actually published.  This tends to happen in big crossover events such as the recent Civil War or the ongoing Countdown titles, where a book is delayed somehow or other, but other books that deal with what occurred or advance the plot are published on time, thereby screwing with story flow.

This also happens with characters like the X-Men, who are popular enough to be published in two or more titles a month.  Uncanny X-Men #496, which came out today, reveals who didn't "come home" after Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men #1's story was done.  Astonishing isn't going to be published until the second week of April.  Thanks, Marvel, thanks SO much.

...However, the identity of the person that isn't coming back is what has me even more pissed off than finding out about it ahead of time.

DAMMIT, WHEDON!  IF I EVER SEE YOU IN PERSON I MAY HAVE TO BREAK ONE OF YOUR KNEECAPS!
